I thought that it might be a good idea to collect advice from the forum old timers and experienced collectors that might be helpful for forum newbies and overall watch collecting and selling newbies, to both get them started, familiarized with the hobbie and the forum mechanics, and to try and help them not get screwed.

PLEASE POST ANY ADDITIONAL FAQ INFORMATION YOU FEEL BELONGS HERE.

Zoodles had some great links on articles with advice for beginner watch collectors, which might be worth posting here.

Answers to Seiko FAQ?s:

- EVERY modern Seiko FULL sized [ISO rated] diver takes 22mm spring bars and straps (except the monster has 20mm lugs, but it is it's own thing)
- FAT spring bars are exactly that. FAT. 1.5mm x 29, 20, 22 ( yes there are more odd-ball sizes)
- The 6309 Diver has 22mm lugs
- The 6105 Diver has 19mm lugs
- NO original bracelet ever came with the 6309 diver
- NO Yao Dial will fit the 6309 movement, without being clever. (its not that hard think movement spacer and tiny drill), but the hands will fit most vintage movements , with some effort
- NO 7s26 movements hacks
- NO 6309/6105/7002 will fit in 7s26 case easily or visa versa
- YES the 6309 is Bigger than the 7s26 moderns style guys
- YES the MM is all that.
- If your dial of super common vintage seiko looks different, its probably not rare. sorry.

Advice for New Forum Members Regarding General Watch Information Found in the Forum:

It would really help other forumers help you with your questions if you try doing some of the following things first:

1. Post pictures with your questions. Nothing will get your question ignored quicker than asking for specific information or opinions on a specific watch (especially vintage models), without those giving the info being able to see what you are talking about. If you need information, help the posters help you by posting pictures of the item in question.

2. If you need to post images, you are better off hosting them off-site and deep linking them from there. Photobucket and Imageshack seem to be two of the preferred free hosting services. This forum does not use image tags in square brackets: [img][/img]. it uses the unes that look like this <img>. You don't have to insert image tags when posting, just the image's web address. The forum software will automatically insert the image tags.

3. Please ask questions, but BEFORE YOU DO RUN A SEARCH. There is a very, very good chance that your question has been asked before more than once and answered at length. The Search link above works best when you search for specific text between quotation marks. The ?New Search Engine? link at the top of the page is even better and much more comprehensive (it will search the forum's database going back a really long time). I advise you start your search with the new search engine. If you still can't find the information, let us know what you found and what you are still looking for.

4. Before asking for pictures of a specific watch, try the advice on #3 above first. Google (and in particular Google Images) also works very well. Usually a search under the words Seiko and the model number or the 8-digit model-case number is good at yielding results.

5. User's contact e-mails are normally (though not always) embedded into their username, which is the first of the two links you see at the top right of every post made by that person. If the person did not embed his address, run a search in the database. Chances are he did at a prior time.

6. Familiarize yourself with the forums resources, such as the watch photo database, the diver's reference, the OT/repair forum, stompox's watch-wiki, etc.

I can not say that for other places on the WEB. So.....Be sure before your next trade/Sale and ask if anyone has dealt with that person and what they experienced. Also new sellers should keep in mind that pricing often reflects how well a sale moves on the trade forum. Unlike eBay, most buyers on forums tend to be very knowledgeable of what price they should be paying for specific items, and will pass on a sale if the price isn't quite right. New sellers often tend to make the mistake of trying to resell pieces at prices relative to the sellers purchase price, which sadly sometimes reflects the inflated price that was originally paid.

Searching the eBay and trade forums for existing and completed sales of specific items can sometimes help establish the rough going rate amongst forumers for a specific item, and increase the chance that the item will be sold.

If you are a buyer and the seller does not post his e-mail information in a sales post, the seller's contact e-mails are normally (though not always) embedded into their username, which is the first of the two links you see at the top right of every post made by that person. If the person did not embed his address, run a search in the database. Chances are he did at a prior time. Also note that many forum members often add things like ?NOSPAM? into their addresses. Keep in mind that such text is intended to cut down on unwanted spam. You are supposed to remove it to get the actual address.

BEFORE BUYING ANYTHING, especially vintage watches, Please, please, please educate yourself as much as possible on the specific watch you are interested in. Not only is confidence in the seller important, but so is knowing what you are supposed to be buying and how much you should be paying for what you are buying (based on condition or level of frankenization).

Above all else, exercise patience in your purchases. No watch buy is ever the last one of a specific model (especially when it comes to Asian watches), and rarely are they ever Rare.
